Artist Statement

My process of glass working varies from abstracting gestural shapes to more simple elegant forms that both use glass as a sculptural form of art.  My interest in the relationship of music with that of human figure is what drives my work.  The steady rhythm and swaying motion of music is apparent in the shapes that are in my work.  I push to relate these forms, with the exaggeration of proportions, to that of the human figure.  The rhythms and fluidity that music contains are also connected to the overall process of glassmaking, which is the reason why I use this medium.
Water and glass have a strong relationship because they can be a solid, a liquid, or anywhere in between.  I capture the point at which glass is not yet a solid, but not completely a liquid, in my figurative forms.  When isolating these points in the different stages of glass I am able obtain the drastic curves and surreal twists that this medium so naturally possesses, similar to that of a figure in motion.
My influences come from the large scale, abstract figurative forms that Alberto Giacometti has established in his work and the way he exaggerates the proportions of the human body.  I am also influenced from areas like that of downtown Seattle and Chicago, where music and art can be seen in unison.  In areas like these cities, people are socializing and interacting with each other, which helps provide and influence the shapes and movement one can see in my work.
